Artist bio: Simon Spare is a potter and abstract painter. He lives on the NW coast and, unable to ignore the influence of his surroundings, everything he makes inevitably takes on a sense of local topography. His practice is a combination of carefully planned geometries and unconscious gesture, all the while embracing the 'happy accident'. He has developed a palette of subtle, muted colours and, in particular, a vocabulary of form that he adapts from one piece to the next. Each painting in a series bears similarity to the last. But when viewed as a whole, there is a sense of continuous and incremental development where some familiar formal motifs and tonal juxtapositions come and go, whilst others remain steadfast. Simon has studied art at the University of Brighton in Sussex and at The Slade School in London. One of his recent paintings was nominated for the Highland Art Prize in 2023.
